The Rolessian National Team under Dean Haldomire: One Year On

A year has now passed since the appointment of legendary Rolessian manager Dean Haldomire as Manager of the Rolessian National Team. I take a look at what has changed in that time in preparation for Cacusia 2026.

Anyone following Rolessian football in the last decade and a half knows the name Dean Haldomire. With 4 RRFF Premier League titles and 4 RRFF Cups to his name during his reign at Fuen Sailors, he is the most decorated manager in Rolessian football in the 21st century. When it took the RRFF over 8 months to announce their replacement for Connor Strickland at the top job, they were criticized for their apparent indecision; when the announcement finally came, the critics fell silent.

So now, over a year since that day, I enter Cyrus Pittman Stadium to find out what has actually changed, and give my verdict on whether Haldomire has what it takes to finally bring the Forest Cup to Atchta.

The Team

If you only looked at the teamsheets, it might seem like not much has changed since A&K 2024, and indeed, most of the squad from that tournament remains on the roster. but as Haldomire emphasised in his opening press conference last year, he was never looking to shake up the team in this way.

We are not lacking in quality players. I know this group of players can go out there and win the Forest Cup. What we need, is new tactics, new ideas, and better attitudes.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been any changes though. New faces Dante Byrne, Carl Fulton, Howard Stanley, Tyler Case, Joseph Hensley, and Aaron Smith enter the squad to replace retiring lengends Joe Stewart, Zach Barron, and Daniel Ayers, as well as accommodate the expanded roster for this event, allowing 26 players on the teamsheet as opposed to 23 in A&K. After the squad reveal, I Interviewed Howard Stanley, the youngest player on the roster at only 19, who will also be taking the number 19 in Cacusia.

It’s a huge honor to be heading to Cacusia… this has been my dream ever since I was a kid, to play for Roless. Dean is an incredible coach… I just know we can win this thing.

Stanley isn’t alone in that confidence in Haldomire’s leadership going into the tournament. I spoke to the captain Ewan Leech on my visit, and he was full of praise for the manager’s actions so far.

Everyone loves him. Not just the players, all the coaching staff, the stadium workers, everyone. He’s strict, yeah - but you gotta be if you’re in the management business. And who’s more in the management business than him, eh?

Leech also told me about what Haldomire had been focusing on, if bringing in new players wasn’t his top priority.

Well, just about everything really. The intensity of training has increased a lot since he got here, in every aspect, fitness, set pieces, everything. I guess if there’s one thing that he’s really focusing on, it’s making sure everyone can and will work together as a team. That was one of the problems under Connor - no shade to him of course, he’s a wonderful manager - but players were playing for themselves just as much as they were for Roless a lot of the time. I don’t see that happening anymore.

Training

Speaking of training, I also paid a visit to the new national team training facilities, which were completed a few months after Haldomire’s appointment. Officially named the Bernard Burrows Training Complex after the legendary defender with the most caps ever for the national team, players have already taken to calling it ‘The Burrow’.

The players are making good use of it too, and all seemed in high spirits when I visited. Whether all this effort will translate to tournament success is impossible to know, but it seems to me they’ve got a damn good shot.
